Today we are going to bring you a short editorial on climate change and then some really well designed sites that are all “green”.Climate change is not an issue to be taken lightly, and while I am no activist, I think that it is something that all humans should be thinking about.
Here are 5 facts on climate change (in no particular order) collected from the least biased sources we could find around the web
- Temperatures could rise by as much as 11°F by the end of this century which could likely cause irrevserable and quite dramatic concequences. – Pew Center on Global Climate Change
- “Increasing global temperatures affect levels and seasonal patterns of both man-made and natural air-borne particles, such as plant pollen, which can trigger asthma. About 300 million people suffer from asthma, and 255 000 people died of the disease in 2005. Asthma deaths are expected to increase by almost 20% in the next 10 years if urgent actions to curb climate change and prepare for its consequences are not taken.” – World Health Organization
- “The Earth’s climate is influenced by many factors, mainly by the amount of energy coming from the sun, but also by factors such as the amount of greenhouse gases and aerosols in the atmosphere, and the properties of the Earth’s surface, which determine how much of this solar energy is retained or reflected back to space.”- Greenfacts.org
- Scientists believe that to avoid the worst, global greenhouse gas emissions need to peak no later than 2015 and the dicline rapidly to levels below 50% of what they were in 2000 by 2050. (That’s quite a feat we have a head of us) – Pew Center on Global Climate Change
- “Over the course of the 21st century, many impacts are expected to occur in natural systems. For instance, changes in precipitation and the melting of ice and snow are expected to increase flood risks in some areas while causing droughts in others. If there is significant warming the capacity of ecosystems to adapt will be exceeded, with negative consequences such as an increased risk of extinction of species.” – Greenfacts.org

Now for some pretty stuff. The sites below are both eye catching and green. Fabulous!
A lot of green sites are ugly! Treehugger breaks out of the mold and has an interesting approach to its deign, which is why it is here. It has 11 separate screens that are arranged vertically.

Low impact living is a crucial step in climate change, and it is also a well designed lifestyle site. The light colors and extra whitespace make this site a winner.

Whole Foods might be the only USDA Certified Organic supermarket chain in the US, but the Oragnic Supermarket’s (from Ireland) blows the Whole Foods site out of the water. This site is earthy and organic feeling, reinforcing the message.

You know you need eco friendly teepee. And this site makes you want to buy it. It is styled very web 2.0. Fancy for toilet paper.

Now, more “Green” sites need better design!
